Viral marketing campaigns can take your brand far in today’s social media savvy environment.  It’s defined as a rapid sharing of an idea with a hint of marketing message about a product or service.  There are plenty of companies who attempt to create viral marketing campaigns and plenty who fail.  Here are a few tips for getting it right:

  • Replicate: You should really study some of the greatest viral marketing campaigns to date.  A Google search will help you identify ones similar to your product or service.  Our favorite viral marketing campaigns are often pieces of video content because it’s so easily shareable.
  • Forecast: Stay on trend with what’s happening in pop culture and then take it to the next level. Based on where we are today – what’s going to be happening tomorrow?  Follow the news and celebrity entertainment for fun ideas to incorporate into your campaign.  Don’t be afraid to take your product to extremes – as long as it makes sense for the brand and doesn’t evoke any negative connotations.
  • Not. Advertise: Consumers are savvy and they will see this as a blatant attempt to fool them. The campaign should have only a hint of marketing incentives.  Subtlety is best here.
  • Partner: Partner unlikely people and organizations outside of your industry to help “sell” the idea or the campaign. Incorporate them in odd ways that can tie in back to your product or brand.  The key with all of these points is to be as creative as possible.
